Why not simply stay in New Orleans? Will has abandoned his wife, been dumped by the first man he thought he loved, and gropes around to find fulfillment in The Big Easy. He meets the vastly handsome David, and they take up life together in the wonder of an Eden of Will’s own creation. But his pilgrimage through the beauties of gay Eden presents challenges for both of them. Their move to California strains their relationship, and Will finds himself in another net from which he struggles to escape. His pursuit of love and companionship brings him to a surprising new world. Nets of Wonder is a novel about hard lessons gained from mistaken beliefs, from the rapture of fulfilled desire against the qualities of respect, trust, and unconditional love.

Nets of Wonderby Robert Heylmun
This is a novel of one man's journey to find and be true to himself as well as those around him. Filled with flawed characters all trying to find their ways in the world of being a gay man in the 70's.
It moves from California to Louisiana and back, through candid dialog and rich surroundings Heylmun created a novel that truly will linger in your mind for a long time. The moment I read the last line, I knew I would be missing Will and George.
My only hope is that there will be a sequel.

Nets of Wonder edition by Robert Heylmun Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Really enjoyed reading this beautiful love story between two very different entities at a time when gay life was not what it is today. The Author does a wonderful job capturing the differing essences of Mr. Handson and Mr. Smarts, the two main characters. San Diego, New Orleans and Laguna are the settings for this engaging book where one experiences what gay life was like many years ago. One moves chapter to chapter wanting more and more; hard to put down. Definitely a good read!
If you were alive in the 60s and 70s, this novel will remind you of the often painful and lonely struggles faced by gay men; and if you were not around then, this book will make you aware of how lucky younger gay men are now. But this is NOT a history book. Instead, it is Will's story of his relationships with captivating and sexy--but often mysterious and impulsive--men. The book explores not only the erotic excitement of physical intimacy, but also the exciting pleasures of intellectual intimacy. Robert Heylmun's accomplished command of the language, especially when he describes the French Quarter of New Orleans, elevates that neighborhood to the status of another character in the book--beautiful, alluring, liberating, and potentially hazardous. This novel, in short, is an absorbing read.
This absorbing novel is both technically and emotionally satisfying, a dual accomplishment by an accomplished writer. Mr. Heylmun's style and command of the language produce a fully satisfying read. The technical elements, including his character development, plot development, and his language team to create a successful foundation for a compelling story. The characters he creates, especially the protagonist Will, are fully believable; we could observer them were we to return to New Orleans or Southern California in the 1960's. Will's story unfolds to reveal him as authentic as his quest for a "Hollywood" love (so typical of young gay men then and now) follows what may be a recognizable sequence of discovery high hopes, the barbs of reality, then despair. Equally recognizable are his friends and their environment their bar social scene, "campy" characters and legal troubles, which faced those gay men of the 60's.
As l read l was surprised by how emotionally involved l became. My response, l soon realized stemmed from the excellence of Mr. Heylmun's writing, particularly his dialog. This author is one who has mastered this difficult art, for his characters speak a language that is both understandable and real. They become not merely interesting, but alive as the novel proceeds, particularly the protagonist Will, whose dialog flows and accurately reflects his age, his struggles and his era. The reader can feel both his pain and joy as he confronts his continual attempts to create a stable, loving relationship. His aspirations touch us because we have experienced them, so recognize them.
I commend Mr. Heylmun as a fine author who like Will, who grows from his quest to create a worthy life, has grown in his quest to create worthy piece of writing, his best to date.
Sensitive intelligent astute rendering of gay psychology. Compelling story with twists and turns.
I am not familiar with this genre which I found Informative about gay relationships and with a good sense of place, The characters were on the whole self indulgent, vain and petty with perhaps the exception of George
I found it a good novel of its type.
NETS OF WONDER hit upon every emotion that I've experienced in my own relationships.
Wanting and needing love so much, that we believe and trust in the face of secrets and lies.
I was moved throughout. Robert Heylmun's best gay novel. More to come I hope.
Not very well written.
